Turn any book into
the format you read.
EPUB, PDF, DOCX, Kindle files and plain text — converted on your own device. Scanned PDFs can be read by free local OCR, or by an AI model that treats every page like a proofreader would.
- No upload for ordinary conversions
- Two OCR modes: free local, or AI vision
- 10 AI pages included, then pay as you go
- No subscription, ever
One quiet tool for the books you own
No account needed for local conversion. No file uploaded unless you deliberately choose the AI reader.
Formats that fit your shelf
Bring EPUB, PDF, DOCX, MOBI, AZW3, HTML, Markdown or TXT. Take EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML or plain text — chapters, headings, lists and images kept where the source allows it.
Text PDFs, rebuilt
A text-layer PDF is not a photo album. Its paragraphs are reassembled into flowing chapters, so the EPUB or DOCX you get is comfortable to read and edit.
Two ways to read a scan
Free local OCR runs entirely in your browser — no account, no upload. The AI reader is for hard scans: faded print, awkward layouts, mixed scripts. Ten pages are on us.
AI reads the page, not a guess
The AI mode sends one rendered page at a time to a vision model that transcribes headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and captions in the book's own language. Each page costs one page from your balance.
Pay for pages, not months
There is no monthly plan and no annual plan. AI pages come in one-time packs and never expire. Start with 10 free pages after signing in; buy more only when you need them.
Quiet by design
No analytics, no tracking pixels, no ad slots. Local conversion never touches the network. AI pages are uploaded only for the moment they are read, and page text is not stored.
Two readers. Pick the right one.
Scanned PDFs have their own tools. Keep ordinary ebook conversion local and use the reader that fits the scan.
Free PDF OCR
Tesseract runs in your browser. No account, no page limit and no upload. Best for clean, straight scans and a quick text copy.
Open Free PDF OCRAI PDF Reader
A vision model reads faint print, complex layouts and mixed scripts. Sign in with Google; the first 10 AI pages are free. No subscription.
Open AI PDF ReaderFrom an awkward file to a readable book
Four steps, one page. Nothing to install.
Drop one file or a small pile. ConvertEbooks reads the format, counts the pages and tells you whether a PDF has a real text layer or is a scan.
Pick EPUB for readers, PDF for sharing, DOCX for editing, HTML for the web, or TXT for the plainest copy. Set title, author and page size if you like.
For scanned pages, use free local OCR or the AI reader. Local OCR is unlimited and private; AI pages are best for messy scans and use your page balance.
Each converted file appears with its size and format. Download individually or take the whole batch as a ZIP. Your originals are untouched.
What goes in, what comes out
Honest about the edges: Kindle formats are accepted as input, not produced as output.
| You have | You can make | What is kept |
|---|---|---|
| .epub | PDF, DOCX, HTML, TXT | Chapters, headings, images, metadata, cover |
| .pdf (text) | EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, TXT | Paragraphs and headings rebuilt from the text layer |
| .pdf (scanned) | EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, TXT | Page text from local OCR or the AI reader |
| .docx | EPUB, PDF, HTML, TXT | Headings, lists, tables, inline images |
| .mobi / .azw3 | EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, TXT | Readable text; DRM-protected books are refused |
| .html / .md / .txt | EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, TXT | Structure where the source has it |
Modern Kindle tools accept EPUB, and producing a correct KF8 file is a different job from renaming an EPUB. ConvertEbooks would rather do five outputs well than ship a broken sixth.
The short answers
Are my books uploaded?
Not for ordinary conversion. EPUB, text PDF, DOCX, Kindle, HTML and TXT files are opened by your browser and converted on your device. Free local OCR also runs in the browser; the OCR language data is downloaded once from a public CDN. Only pages you deliberately send through the AI reader are uploaded — one page at a time, never the whole file.
What is the difference between free OCR and AI OCR?
Free OCR uses Tesseract in your browser. It is good on clean scans, unlimited, needs no account and never uploads a page. AI OCR uses a DeepSeek vision model on our server. It is much better on difficult pages — small print, mixed languages, unusual layouts — and costs one page from your balance per page read. You can compare both on the same file.
How do AI pages work?
Sign in with Google and you get 10 AI pages free. After that, buy a pack: $3 for 300 pages, $5 for 600, $10 for 1,200 or $20 for 2,500. Pages do not expire and there is no subscription. A page is charged only after the AI returns a transcription; a failed call costs nothing.
Can I use a text PDF without an account?
Yes. Text PDFs are parsed and rebuilt entirely in your browser. You only need an account for the AI reader. If a PDF mixes text pages and scanned pages, only the scanned pages need OCR.
Which languages does the AI reader handle?
The vision model reads the page in its original language. English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German and many others work well. For local OCR, pick the language from the list before starting; that choice matters much more.
What about DRM and copyright?
ConvertEbooks does not remove DRM. If a Kindle file is protected, the converter will refuse it. Use it for books you have the right to convert; converting a book you own into another format for your own reading is the intended use.
Your shelf already has enough formats.
Make them agree. Start with a free local conversion, and bring a scanned book to the AI reader when it needs one.
